General description : Chamba is famous for milk and honey; so it is also called 'valley of milk and honey'. Raja Sahil Varma founded Chamba town in 920 AD and shifted his capital of the princly State of 6th century from Bharmaur to Chamba. The name of the king's new capital was kept after his favourite daughter's name 'Champabati' who selected the present site when she visited the place first time with her father for hunting. Champabati is still worshipped as goddess in Chamba. Chamba town of area about 3 sq. km. is at the centre of the valley. In the centre of the town, there is a grassy promenade of 1 Km long which is called as "Chougan" i.e. the centre of cultural activities. Due its mounteneous terrain it was possibly made difficult for the occasional conquerors to invade Chamba. So, there has been no interference in the social and religious life of the people as well as structures. Even now, there exist the old tribes named Caddles and Pangwalas whose customs, culture and habits differ from rest of the district. The scenic beauty of Chamba valley is unforgettable. the craftsmen of Chamba have developed ite own rich style of Pahari art. The art, architecture and its heritage has been preserved. Embroidery work, miniature painting, hand crafted metal and leather goods deserve high appriciations. Even a miniature colourful niddle work on a piece of cloth i.e. "Chamba Rumal" is very famous throughout the world. Even any description of Chamba art would take several pages of the website. It is, therefore suggested to visit the place and see the art objects in own eyes of the tourists. The pace is not very cold rather warm; but comfortable.
