Sri Nainadevi, District: Una, H.P.
Location : The NH 21 from Chandigarh passes through Kiratpur, Swarghat, Bilaspur, etc. in Himachal Pradesh. A road goes from westward from a point 14 KM from Kiratpur on Kiratpur-Bilaspur section of NH 21. Nainadevi temple is situated on a hill (1083 M) at a distance of about 20 KM from NH 21. The temple can also be visited from Anandpur Sahib (9 KM) in Punjab on Kiratpur Nangal/Una road.
General description : Nainadevi is one of the 51 Shatipeeths in India. It is believed that the eyes of Sati had fallen there. The temple is shikara type with a domed mandapa. An image of Goddess Nainadevi's eyes are encrusted with silver inside the temple. The images of Lord Ganesha are also situated on either side of the main image. The place is regarded as a sacred one and the temple is famous for fulfilling of wishes of the devotees. There is a cave nearby and it is believed to be the abode of Shree Naina Devi. The visitor are to ascend 500 steps to reach the temple. An aerial ropeway service is also available from Swarghat- Bhakra road to Nainadevi temple. The panoramic view of Govind Sagar Lake is amazing. The place is also sacred to Sikhs as Guru Govind Singh had performed yagna to get the blessings of the Goddess before going to fight against Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's army.
Bhakra-Nangal Dam can be visited by the tourists on this route. The dam is 225.55 M high and 518.16 M wide on the river Sutlej and generates power. This is one of the large hydro-power project in India. The dam is also very important for the flood control and irrigation.
