The original name of the city has been derived from the name of the Saint Gwaleepa. Suraj Sen (or Surya Sena), a prince of the Kachhwaha clan of the 8th century had lost his way in the jungle and ultimately wandered up to a secluded hill. The Prince met an old man, Sage Gwalipa. On asking the sage for some drinking water he was led to a pond. The pond water not only quenched his thirst but also cured him of leprosy. Out of gratefulness he wanted to offer something in return to the sage. The sage asked him to build a fort. Thus came up the fort named Gwalior, and later on, the city was developed around it. In the past it was known as Pourab. The city consists of Murar, Laskar and Gwalior. Gwalior is to the North-West of MP and on the border of UP. The fort is the main attraction of Gwalior. The new city is located to the south i.e. in Laskar, railway is to the South-East of fort and the airport is 9 km to the North-East in Gwalior.
