Maheswar is a town on the north bank of the Narmada River in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh state. It is located 13 km east of National Highway 3 (Agra-Mumbai highway) and 91 km from Indore, the commercial capital of the state.

Mahismwati of Ramayana and Mahabharata is known as Maheshwar. In ancient time the place was the centre of education & culture and it was the capital of Indore before Indore was developed. There are seven temples at the confluence of Narmada and Maheshwar Rivers. At the hill top Kaleshwar, Jaleshwar. 3 km away from bus stand there is a fort where the palace of Ahayabai or Rajwara is situated. The Gurudwara built in Shivpuri to commemorate Guru Nanak’s 16th century visit to Omkareshwar.In the suburban area of the city, the river Narmada becomes multi –winged. Today, Maheshwar is also known for its distinctive handwoven sarees called Maheshwari.

5 km away from Maheshwar on the embankment of Narmada there is Mandaleashwar and palace of Holkar King Tukoji RaoII. A big ghat with flights of 123 steps down to the water level of Narmada has been built and a Ram Temple at the ghat was also there.

Rajgaddi and Rajwada: A life-size statue of Rani Ahilyabai sits on a throne in the Rajgaddi within the fort complex. This is the right place to begin a tour of Maheshwar, for this pious and wise queen was the architect of its revived importance. Other fascinating relics and heirlooms of the Holkar dynasty can be seen in the other rooms which are open to the public. Within the complex is an exquisite small shrine which is a starting point of the ancient Dussehra ceremony which is carried out even today. The image on this day is installed reverently in a splendid palanquin and carried down the steep fort road to the town below to receive the yearly homage of the people of Maheshwar.
