The area was known as 'Sukhim'. Such name is believed to be derived from a combination of two words in the (Limbu) Su, which means new, and Khyim, which means "palace" or house, in reference to the palace built by the tate's first ruler, Phuntsong Namgyal. The Tibetan name for Sikkim is Denjong, it means the "valley of rice". The Lepchas, original inhabitants of Sikkim called it Wye-mae-el or paradise and Bhutias call it Beymul emazon,which means the hidden valley of rice.

General information: Sikkim is the second smallest state of India spread ed over an area of 110km and geographically diverse, owing to its location on the Himalayas. It is thumb-shaped with an area of 2,745 sq. miles  (7,110 sq. km.) and land-locked border State. The climate ranges from sub-tropical to high alpine. Khan-chen-dzonga (8,598 m)., the world's third highest peak, is located in the north-western part of the state on the boundary with Nepal, and can be seen from most parts of the state. The our districts on all four sides of Khan-chen-Dzonga (east, west, north & south) are dazzled with the sunlight reflected by its white snow. Sikkim is a popular tourist destination for its ulture, scenic beauty and bio diversity. The official language of the State is English.

The State has four districts with State headquarter (HQ) at Gangtok. The District Collectors are in charge of the administration of the civilian areas of the districts. The Indian army has control of a large territory, as the state is a sensitive border area. Many areas are restricted and permits are needed to visit these areas. There are a total of eight towns and nine subdivisions in Sikkim. The four districts are East Sikkim (HQ: Gangtok), West Sikkim (HQ: Geyzing) North Sikkim (HQ: Mangan) and South Sikkim (HQ: Namchi). These Four Districts are further divided into Subdivisions. Pakyong is the subdivision of East District. Soreng is the subdivision of West District. Chungthang is the subdivision of North District. Ravangla is the subdivision of South District.
