
Munsiyari
is a small hamlet about 127 km north of Pithoragarh and 66 km from Jauljibi. It is situated at a height of 2135 m in the Kumaon Hills. The entire region is known as Johar valley. Munsiyari is a base for treks to Milam and Namik glaciers. The places to see around Munsiyari are alpine lakes of Maheshwari Kund and Thamri Kund. The Panchchuli hills that look like five chimneys are also view for the tourist attraction. A tributary of the river Mahakali, Goriganga drains the 18 km long Milam glacier near Munsiyari before merging into the Balati glaciers and the Panchachuli Milam glacier before flowing into the Ganga in the plains.
Dozens of amazingly beautiful peaks, some as high as 20,000 feet, are seen from here. The Panchchuli hills that look like five chimneys are a sight-worth-seeing. Several other peaks lend even more grace and stature to the place.
Alpine lakes of Maheshwari Kund and Thamri Kund are very close to Munsiyari. Munsiyari Bugyal, an alpine meadow full of wild flowers is enchanting. Khalia Top and Betulidhar are suited for skiing.
Commonly sighted species of mountain birds are the whistling thrush, wagtail and hawk cuckoo, and falcon and serpent eagle. Leopard, panther and mountain bear in the surrounding forest are also found
The nearest small airstrip is located 128 km from Munsiyari at Naini Saini in Pithoragarh and the nearest railway station is 261 km away, in Kathgodam. The best way to reach this little heavenly hamlet is through road from Pithoragarh 128 km, Nainital 330 km, Kathgodam 261 km and Delhi 612 km.
