Bishnupur is located 151 km. North-West of Kolkata,near the river Dhaleswari in the district of Bankura.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: ), Bishnupur is now the headquarter of Location of Bishnupurthe subdivision of the same name in Bankura district and is the seat of crafts and culture. This land is also called Mallabhum after the Malla rulers of this place. The Malla rulers were Vaishnavites and built the famous terracotta temples during the 17th and 18th century at this place. The terracotta temples here are the best specimen of classical Bengal architecture. It was the capital of the Malla kings of Mallabhum, for almost a thousand years.The patronage of Malla king Veer Hambir and his successors Raja Raghunath Singha and Veer Singha made Bishnupur which is one of the principal centers of culture in Bengal . Most of the exquisite terracotta temples for which it is famous were built during this period.

Besides the unique architecture, Bishnupur is also famous for its terracotta craft and the Baluchari sarees made from tassar silk. Apart from this the Malla rulers were also patrons of music and painting and so gave rise to Bishnupur gharana of Hindusthani classical music and the Bishnupur school of painting. Bellmetalware and conch-shell jewellery are also available here.

Transport: Road: Distance from Kolkata by road is 151km, from Kharagpur 81 km and from Joyrambati 43 km. Frequent bus services are available from all the three above mentioned places. SBSTC, CSTC and private buses ply from Kolkata (Esplanade), Burdwan, Piruliya, Durgapur and Kharagpur/ Midnapore. CSTC buses at regular intervals leave from the Sahid Minar in Kolkata. Railway: Distance from Howrah by rail is 200 km. Express trains leave Howrah every day at 6 AM, 4.30 PM and 22.00hr. From Shalimar Station near Howrah an express train starts at 7.45 AM. The train takes about 4 hours to reach Bishnupur. Alternatively, the tourists can go via Durgapur. The bus from Durgapur takes about 1.30 hours to reach Bishnupur. The bus journey is preferred by many travellers in this route although it takes about 5 to 6 hours from Kolkata.

Special mention: The lattest attraction of Bishnupur Is the Bishnupur Fair which begins from the 7th of Poush(last week of December)and continues for about a week. During Shravan Sankranti, Jhapan that deals with the worship of Goddess Manasha, daughter of Shiva is another attraction in Bishnuour. It is a competition to show the expertise of the snake charmers.
