Diamond Harbour with a population of 37,238 is a sub-divisional town of South 24-Paraganas
District of West Bengal and is situated on the river bank of the Hooghly River. This small town is popular weekend tourists spot about 50 KM away from Kolkata Metropolitan City.
Earlier it was known as Hajipur and was named Diamond Harbour by the British. The place was considered a safe resting spot for ocean going ships and offered a spectacular view of the river. After the Rupnarayan River joins the Hooghly, the river bends south and widens out to a form a huge expanse of water. A little further down, the Haldi River joins it and flows towards the Bay of Bengal.
In earlier days Diamond Harbour used to be a stronghold of Portuguese pirates. The ruins of the fort of Chingrikhali can still be seen. It is believed to be linked with the Portuguese but some opine that the East India Company built it before they could establish themselves in Kolkata. There is an old lighthouse nearby. Diamond Harbour is well connected with Kolkata by road and rail.

Gangasagar is a popular pilgrimage centre where people go to have bath to wash their sins. Bakkhali is gaining in popularity as a beach resort. There is a five star hotel with a magnificent panoramic view of the river at Raichak. Jetties at Diamond Harbour, Raichak and Mirpur provide steamer service to the other bank of the river.

How to reach
Diamond Harbor is easily accessible from Kolkotta. The road as well as rail services link the delightful destination of Diamond Harbor with Kolkota.
BY RAIL - There are trains that leave the Sealdah station and connect Kolkotta with Diamond Harbor; the entire journey is completed in about an hour and a half.
BY ROAD - There are frequent buses that ply between the Shahid Minar bus terminus and Diamond Harbor throughout the day. The government runs these buses. Some private bus services can also be availed from Babughat in order to travel to the Diamond Harbor. The cars and the chartered buses make the other possible means of transportation to Diamond Harbor.
